Biovaaka
Smart scales that show diners their plate waste in real time
Biovaaka makes smart scales for professional kitchens and self-service restaurants that weigh organic waste and, in the 'Serve' version, give diners immediate feedback on what they left on the plate. Data goes to a cloud service where kitchen managers track waste per meal and adjust menus and portions. It started at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences and is used by student, staff and school restaurants in Finland.
Our reading. Best for Nordic canteens and self-service restaurants that want a low-tech, diner-facing way to cut plate waste without AI cameras.
Strengths
- Guest-facing feedback screen nudges diners, not only staff
- Entry-level 'Flow' version needs only a scale and a tablet
- Backed by a Finnish foodservice group and EIT Food
Limits
- Customer base is essentially Finnish canteens and campus restaurants
- Weight-based; does not identify which dishes were wasted
- No documented integrations with POS or inventory tools
University spin-out from 2018, small team, minority-backed by Fredman Group and supported by EIT Food
